Is Nascar Better Or Worse Than It Was In Early And Late 90’s? 19
Dec

In your opinion, is NASCAR better now or when it was in the early 1990’s and late 90’s. I think the races were better then, and racing now is a little less entertaining. Tell me what you think.

  1. Superdav Says:

I don’t think I can add anything to what has already been said by Lynn and Winter Glory. What they have said is the same thing I think about it. I will be a Nascar fan as long as I live on this earth. But I bet in heaven(if I make it there lol (J/K) the racing will be remarkable.
    BTW: Great question!

  2. 48 MOJO Says:

I think the racing was better then because drivers were not so restricted on what they say and do.Besides, you had hotheads like Earnhardt and Wallace that would put you in the wall in a heartbeat for a win.NASCAR today has too many rules and they don’t allow the drivers’ personalities to come through as much. They have tried to allow more this year, but they are still inhibited. As far as the competition goes,I think it is better today because they are more than just a handful of drivers that are capable of winning on any given week.If we could take the TYPE of racing from back then and mix it with the depth of competition we have now, that would be great!

That’s a great question! I think you’re right that the racing hasn’t been as great as it was back then. I think that NASCAR has gone more hollywood as they have tried to get exposure from the Chase, Talladega Nights, etc. I think back then it was just racing and they didn’t have to be fighting for ratings with other sports. I’m a big fan of the COT for the safety reasons, but there are some races like Atlanta coming up this week that don’t produce as great of racing as there used to be. Also, I have noticed a lot of finishes where the race winner would have like a six-second lead over 2nd place (some of the races won by Kyle and Carl are examples of that). I don’t have a problem with the best car winning the race, but I would like to see more challenges for the win. I think the commentary was much better back than also. I’m a big fan of the sport, but I think the racing today just doesn’t compare to back then.

Back in the day NA SCAR was about racing pure and simple they banged, bumped and flat out raced. Today it is different there are to many rules and the sport has taken a turn. Better or worse I am not sure. Nice thing is safety and since Dale Earnhardt died nobody else has, safety it key and I think that is a good thing. I do believe they should let the drivers and teams be able to show some emotion and let them act on it. I am not talking about brawling on the track but anger and attitude is a part of life and they should not be penalized for it, we are all human and they too should be allowed to be.

  5. Colonel Reb Says:

The racing was generally better then. NASCAR didn’t try to control the drivers nearly to the same extent they do now. Everything’s more sponsor-driven now. That’s worse.
So I’d say it’s worse. I still really like NASCAR, but it’s not as exciting as it used to be. The one thing that’s better now is competition is much better.

  6. Madame Lynn Says:

Worse. It’s too politically correct now. I wasn’t a Dale Earnhardt, Sr. fan, but he was right about a lot of things.
He didn’t like restrictor plate racing, although he was good at it. I remember one time he said something like this:
“Take off the restrictor plates. If you’re too scared to race, go find another job”.
Sorry I don’t recall his exact words, but they were something like that. I feel the same way about the lucky dog rule and pit road speed limits. If you’re too scared to be out there, find another job. I don’t want to see anyone hurt, but it’s a dangerous sport.

  7. marianne Says:

I don’t have much to go on, as I didn’t really start following it until 2001, but just since that time I have seen lots of changes, some good, some not. I enjoy watching & going to the races rooting for…who else??..Dale, Jr!, but sometimes the races are downright boring. I was especially disappointed in the early Bristol race this year….YAWN….

  8. dalejr4e Says:

Heck give me back some 60’s,70’s & 80’s Nascar was way better back then its gotten way to dang Hollywood, Corporate & $$$$$$$$$$, I loved those good ole days, when they were good ole boys out there beating and banging, hard core racing, “Get outta my way, I got a race to win”. Madame Lynn and Winter Glory had some super comments as well, I’m just older than they are.. I miss the great ole days of Nascar, but I keep watching and always a fan… Catch some of the Back in the Day episodes on Speed TV, you’ll see what I mean.
    Go Dale Jr & Hms
    Go Rays!!

  9. WooleyBooley again Says:

Absolutely ! They’ve ruined NASCAR with the COT and many of these “innovation” rules trying to copy WWE wrestling. It’s a joke now. Plus, because they use only one tire supplier, tires from Goodyear have dictated races this year. What’s up with that.

  10. #88 forever Says:

i enjoyed it alot better back in the day when their weren’t so many rules
Dale Sr was the best entertainment i have ever saw and he could piss everybody off that’s why i liked him. Now days you got to play nice or you get send to the trailer more fun back then.

  11. 2 and 14 Fan Says:

The racing was definitely better then. I have to watch the truck series to see the type of racing that turned me into a NASCAR fan in the first place.

  12. PJ ~ 88 FAN Says:

Definitely better then. I agree, the truck races are good ole racing. Lynn & Winter Glory pretty much said it all and I feel the same way. I won’t stop being a Nascar fan but I would like to see Nascar let em race.

  13. Winter Glory Says:

The NASCAR we’re seeing now is a watered down version of what it once was.
I still love it, but it was definately better once upon a time ago..

  14. fluffy Says:

put it this way… it “could” be better now.
it has become rather pussified. But NASCAR is still the best motorsport on this planet.

  15. Jay Says:

Worse. Drivers weren’t so afraid to bump and rub back then. Not too mention, anywhere Dale Earnhardt was, there was something going on.

  16. Monkeys! Says:

Hate to say it, but it’s much worser. NASCAR and the COT have screwed up everything right now.
    Da 90’s were awesome.

  17. bestansw Says:

The early 90s were wayyyyyyyy better

  18. Tbone Says:

More competetive now. In the 90’s there were literally only 6 or 7 drivers contending for wins. Now there are 25.

  19. Leo Says:

    worse. too many regulations

  20. NY METS 2010BE THERE! Says:

A little better by making it safer but their were better drivers back then

  21. hrdbanki Says:

I just started watching NASCAR and I am loving it! Not sure what it was like back in the 90’s.

  22. Theda is happy Says:

    It was better then.

  23. the real GreenBean Says:

    way worse
back then they was just getting ready to race

  24. Rackpurdue #88 all the way Says:

It was better then but I still love it!
